  • ~ Monday Morning Rush ~ . . 😑 . . . . The Changpa herdsman told me there were about 200 Yaks, sheep and Changthani pashmina goats (this is where authentic cashmere wool comes from btw). The Changpas are a nomadic tribe who live in the unforgiving high altitude terrain between 12,000 to 16,000 feet, and it is amazing how they do not fear the extreme cold and icy wind and live in harmony with the unpredictable nature of this place moving from one pasture to another, everyday, year on year. . . .   • The last time I was at this remote Himalayan village was in the first week of January last year. Yup. The peak of winter in Ladakh where the temperature drops down to MINUS 25 to 30!! 😬 I thought I would die of the extreme cold but surprisingly I managed to get out and promised myself that one day I would come back here again..when it is warmer! 😔 . . What I didn't know was it was going to be this soon! . . Last time around Hanle was brown and white but this time this beautiful village was full of colours and blooming! Most tourist don't bother coming here and those who do only come because Hanle has one among the World's Highest Astronomical Observatory at 14,800 feet. . . But I come here because I love this village. I love the road that leads to this village, the beautiful people here, the wildlife in this region and the dramatic landscape around it! I come here and do absolutely nothing and for some weird reason, it makes me very happy! .   • When I told my friends I want to ride down to Tso Kar, almost everyone told me, "It isn't really worth it!", "There is nothing there" or "It is a dead lake, hardly any water also". Etc. Etc. 😔 . . But I had never been to Tso Kar despite coming to Ladakh region multiple times, so I decided to make this my first stop from Leh, after crossing Tanglang La. And I don't know about you but I thought the landscape here was MAGICAL! ❤️ . . At 14,860 ft asl, it is a lake with hardly any water but it was far from being dead. The marshland of a lake had so much life going on if you really look. The Changpa herdsman with his 200 odd sheep, goats and yaks, rare birds like the black neck crane and brown headed gulls, the Kiangs roaming about and much more. I loved the serenity of this place! 😍 . . So really, what might not be beautiful for someone might be beautiful to you.   • Just three friends trying to get a quiet drink at Cafe Himalayas before Monday hits us all! 😬😔 . . Btw, those are Kiangs or the Tibetian Wild Asses. They are kinda cute but from what I heard, quite useless too because they cannot be domesticated and are found in abundance in the Chumathang area of Ladhak. . . While riding to Hanle, there was a moment when a bunch of them were galloping next to the road and then crossed right in front of me! It was like a scene out of a Hollywood movie, you know where a bunch of gorgeous horses gallop alongside the road, everything in Slow-Mo and some sweet music in the background!   • So, day before yesterday I turned a year older! 😬 . . Infact, this picture is of my birthday morning just as I was leaving Tso Moriri for Hanle. I am not a big Birthday person but I have had this thing going on for the last few years that on my Birthday, I want to be somewhere, or do something, that makes me feel alive and reminds me why I am really alive! . . This year I spent my Birthday week riding in the Himalayas and it was nothing less than a miracle for me because I started riding a motorcycle just last year and this was my first riding trip....EVER! I have been coming to different parts of the Himalayas every year since 2012, but this time it was special. I realised so much about myself and my capabilities and was also reminded of something very important; that it is NEVER too late to do things you want to do or to try something absolutely new! . .   • Cute? Yes! Cheeky? Very! 😬 . . Phugtal monastery has more 30 monk kids. So basically there are more kids than adult monks here. This monastery is in the remote corner of the Himalayas and most villages are not even connected by any motorable road. So every family from the nearby village send one child to this monastery. Here these children study together, eat together, do their chores together and live the monastic life which is not easy. For most kids this life is not a choice but this helps them and their family. They are a curious bunch, very cute but also very cheeky! . . They followed me around curiously asking me a barrage of questions, and when I told them my name is Priyanka. Pat came the response, Priyanka Chopra! All through my time there they followed me like Pied Pipper and went chirping Priyanka Chopra! ...Oh well. But one kid also asked me why I was Fat! 🙄 I took a while to respond to that because while he was a kid, he was also a monk!   • Kids will be kids, Monk or not! 😁 . . . While staying at this monastery, I was lucky enough to witness one of their lunar festival. What's special about this particular monastery, apart from being incredibly beautiful, is that there are more monk kids here than adults. About 30 children live and study here, in the age group of 7 to 17 under the supervision of 10 or so adult monks. . . In the video, the adult monks are performing a solemn ceremony while the kid monks are playing around making noise and get scolded by a senior monk. I found this really funny because this moment totally reminded me of my school days! 😁 . .
